Donal Yeang holds two Masters Degrees in forestry and conservation policy, and has more than three years of field experience in forestry including research, analysis, organizing and training local communities and forestry officers on forest biomass inventory, REDD+ workshops related to tenure rights and benefit sharing, and social assessments. In addition, Donal conducted a study on social safeguards in the context of REDD+ implementation in Cambodia and presented the results at the 2011 Development and Research Forum (DRF): Symposium on Research and Policy Response to Cambodia’s Recovery and Development in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He used to work as a Senior Carbon Program Officer at Pact Cambodia where he used to involve in planning and implementing biomass inventory, social assessments (household surveys and participatory rural appraisals) for the Oddar Meanchey Community Forestry REDD+ (OM CF REDD+) project which is the first project in Asia validated under both the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Climate Community and Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA) guidelines. He used work as a National REDD+ Policy Adviser at Fauna & Flora International (FFI) where he supports the development of national REDD+ policies that strengthen the role of local government and communities in Cambodia. In addition, he also facilitates the development of sub-national procedures and regulations for the implementation of the Siem Reap Community Forestry REDD+ (SR CF REDD+) project in Cambodia.Currently, Donal is working as a REDD+ specialist at Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) where he provides technical advice and support for the development and implementation of Seima Protection Forest (SPF) REDD+ Demonstration Project and Northern Plains REDD+ initiatives.
His main research interests include forest policy and institutional analysis, nature conservation policy, climate change policy, and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), particularly tenure rights and benefit sharing under REDD+.
